Hygiene

Recent research has demonstrated that the hardened bacterial plaque that accumulates below the gum line releases poison that painlessly dissolves the gum and the bone that support the teeth. Gum disease develops when the teeth are not properly cared for. If this goes untreated, the teeth may eventually fall out, causing tooth loss.

Our hygienists have specific university training and specialize in removing the plaque and hard tartar (calculus) build-up. Lise, Toni and Victoria will take care of you with their thorough and gentle cleaning techniques.

Facts on Gum (Periodontal) Disease

Periodontal disease affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Gingivitis is an early stage of periodontal disease where the gums may become red, swollen and bleed easily. If left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, a progressive disease that can lead to further destruction of the bone and tissue supporting the teeth.

Almost 80% of all employed Canadians have some form of attachment loss (gums are pulling away from the teeth). Warning signs of periodontal disease include the following:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums.
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing.
  • Loose or separating teeth.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • Change in the way the teeth fit together when you bite.
  • Change in the fit of a partial denture.
There is a growing body of scientific evidence suggesting possible links between periodontal disease and other systemic diseases such as diabetes and coronary heart disease. The good news is that periodontal disease is treatable and preventable.  We provide you with professional care in our office and instructions on proper home care.
